FAQ

Scheduling

How soon can I get my appointment?

Depending on what procedures you are having and what radiologist you want to see, we can usually schedule you within the current week. If you need an immediate appointment because you are having a problem, we will make every effort to accommodate you for the same day or next business day.

If I need to be seen right away and my regular radiologist doesn’t have an opening, can I see another radiologist?

Absolutely. In fact we prefer that you not wait for your regular radiologist’s schedule to open up if you’re having a problem. We recommend that you come in as soon as possible to see any of our available radiologists. Our doctors always share information and work with one another. Your images will be reviewed by a second radiologist in the practice, so if you are not able to see your regular doctor for your visit, we can make sure that doctor still reviews your images.

What’s the difference between seeing the doctor and not seeing the doctor on the day of my visit?

By choosing to see the radiologist for a screening breast imaging test (a mammogram or breast ultrasound), you will be having a consultation with the radiologist that includes a discussion of the results of your exam, answering your questions, a physical examination of your breasts, and any appropriate recommendations. The final written report will be sent to your referring doctor within a couple days of your visit.

By choosing not to see the radiologist for a screening breast imaging test (a mammogram or breast ultrasound), the technologist will perform your exam, after which you may get dressed, return to the reception area, and leave. Your results, after being double-read, will be mailed to you and sent to your referring doctor within a few days of your visit. If the radiologist needs to clarify an area in your breast, you will need to return for extra images at an additional fee.

Insurance & Payments

What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept all major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and Amex), checks, money orders, and cash.

Do you take insurance?

Medical Imaging and its doctors do not participate with any insurance carriers. We require payment for services at the time of your visit. We will give you a claim form for you to submit to your insurance carrier to get reimbursed according to your plan. We are happy to try to help you get your reimbursement; however, we are not responsible for any insurance payments, or lack thereof.

What does “opting out of Medicare” mean and how does that affect the way I submit to insurance?

Due to current regulations that would make it illegal for our practice to charge patients for office consultations, we have been forced to opt out of Medicare.

The office consultations performed by our radiologists include reviewing and explaining the results of the exams and procedures you had, answering your questions, performing a physical examination of your breasts (when scheduled for breast imaging), making recommendations for future tests, and having a second one of our radiologists double-read your exams before sending a written report to your referring physician(s). They are the hallmark of how we have practiced radiology at Medical Imaging of Manhattan since 1989, and they are something we are not willing to forego. We will not become an impersonal clinic or a screening mill, nor treat patients with two sets of standards, depending on their insurance.

Opting out means all of you who have Medicare will not be able to submit claims to, or be reimbursed by Medicare, nor can Medical Imaging of Manhattan submit claims to Medicare on your behalf. We understand this represents a financial burden for many, and accordingly we are giving all patients who have Medicare Part B as their primary insurance a 20% discount from our standard fees.

If you have any questions regarding these changes, please speak with our billing manager, Alma Pacheco, or our practice Administrator, Rachael Petrus.

Why don’t you submit to insurance for me?

We are a non-participating provider. This means that we do not have a signed contract with any insurance companies. We require payment from you for services rendered at the time of your visit. We will give you a claim form for you to submit to your insurance carrier in order to get reimbursed according to your plan.

Why do you scan my insurance card(s) if you don’t take insurance?

Insurance companies occasionally call us for information, so it is helpful to have your policy information on file. More importantly, we like to have your insurance information so that we may print out a claim form for you at the completion of your visit. For patients with Medicare, we like to have a record because this enables us to apply the Medicare discount to your account.

Medical Records

How do I get copies of my records?

In order for our office to release your records to you or whomever you choose, we need a signed release form. Our policy requires that you fill out and sign our release form and not one from another facility. You may download the form on the "Forms & Info" page of the website, or you may call/email the office to request one. We can mail it, fax it, or email it to you.

Is there a cost for obtaining copies of my records?

The first set of images is always free. If you need a duplicate set, or request the same set again at a later date, the fee is $50 per date of service. The only other charge you might incur is the delivery charge. It is $12 to deliver anywhere in Manhattan, and $17 anywhere outside of Manhattan. If you choose to pick up your records, there is no fee. Copies of Reports (only, without images) are always free of charge.

In what format(s) can I request my records?

You can request to have your images printed on x-ray film or on a disc.

How long does it take to get my records?

Your request will take 3-5 business days to complete, unless otherwise arranged. The process of printing your records will not begin until written authorization and any applicable payment is received.

Procedures

What age do you recommend for a mammogram?

Our practice stands by our recommendation for annual mammograms beginning at age 40 for all women.

How much radiation is emitted from the mammogram machine and is it enough to worry about?

The radiation given off from modern mammography equipment is considered so low that it poses no risk of triggering cancer in healthy cells.

Is a bone densitometry an x-ray procedure?

Yes, but it uses only a miniscule and harmless amount of radiation.

The MIMRAD Process

Why do I have to fill out the paperwork every time I come, even though I have been coming for years?

Whether you are a new patient or an established one, you will be asked to fill out a questionnaire regarding your medical history. Please understand that if you have been here before, although we keep all of the information you have filled out in the past and refer to it, it is very important that you give us a current update to many of the same questions. This information is critical for the interpretation of your exam.

If I come in for a screening exam without an office consultation, how soon will I be notified if there are suspicious findings on my images?

If we find that you need additional imaging, you will be notified within a couple of days.

Do I need a prescription?

We do not require that you have a prescription to have your exams done. However, you may need a prescription for insurance purposes. We advise that you check with your insurance plan and obtain a prescription if necessary. If in fact you have a prescription, please bring it in for your visit, as our doctors like to see what your doctor has prescribed. We do require that you give us information on your referring physician, who must be the primary person to get your report.

Can I request a specific technologist?

We do not schedule appointments with technologists, only with the radiologists. However, we will gladly make note of any requests for technologists you may have. If the technologist is here on the day of your visit, they will make every effort to accommodate your request. We also advise that you call the office the week prior to your appointment to make sure the technologist is scheduled to be working that day.

Why do I need extra pictures?

After the initial study has been done, the technologist or the radiologist may call you back in the examination room in order to take additional images. Don’t be alarmed. This usually means that one or more of the images needed clarification. In the case of mammography, most often this is because some of your breast tissue was overlapping and in order to see it better, the breast has to be positioned differently. Please remember that the vast majority of exams are normal.

Will there be a wait to see the doctor after I’ve had my exams?

After you have had your exams, the radiologist needs time to review the images so that she can discuss the results with you on the same day.
